China eSIM vs local SIM (2026): which to buy

China eSIM vs local SIM (2026): which to buy
AI-generated image

At Pudong or Beijing Capital, the SIM counter opens after the belts, with a passport, a queue, and real-name registration. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Once the handset takes an eSIM profile, we pick the eSIM. A local SIM only comes in for a precise reason: a Chinese number, an incompatible phone, a stay that looks like a move.

This piece does not freeze a yuan price. Shops and marketplaces move. Today’s plans: the China eSIM comparison.

China eSIM: the default if the phone is compatible

Unlocked phone, an iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel that swallows a QR: buy an eSIM plan. Maps, offline translation, tickets, messages. No deposit. No nano-SIM to lose in a taxi.

Some regional variants, including many iPhones sold in mainland China on generations without eSIM, refuse the QR. The country you visit does not decide. The model does. Check it in the compatibility tool before you pay.

Install the profile before the flight. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank 2FA texts. Switch off EE, Vodafone and Three data: China is not in roam-like-at-home. The detail is in China roaming 2026.

Read the named network (China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom) as on any plan. An eSIM that writes China Mobile is not “less local” than a Telecom plastic card from the counter. The contract changes. The tower often does not. See Chinese mobile networks.

Also read where the traffic exits. A counter SIM is an IP in mainland China. A travel eSIM might be too, or it might roam out. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and part of the usual web may not answer on a local IP. We do not publish a bypass procedure. We read the sheet, then choose with that in view. WeChat, Alipay and offline maps stay the practical stack. The overview: Internet in China in 2026.

Same question as in the shop: which MNO, which hotspot, which duration, which zone (mainland or Hong Kong).

Nomad, GigSky, Yesim, GoMoWorld, Ubigi, Airhub: same grid. We talk about everyone. We crown no one. The live table settles the price.

When a local SIM in China still wins

Four cases, not “just in case”.

  1. You want a Chinese number (+86) because a counter, a delivery, a train or a local app refuses a foreign number. WeChat often accepts a foreign number. Not every local service does.
  2. The phone refuses eSIM: the tool says no, the carrier locked it, or it is a variant with no eSIM.
  3. You stay for weeks, with voice plus data that looks like a resident’s, and you accept passport plus registration.
  4. You want for sure a Chinese operator plan and a local IP, and you accept the filtering that comes with it. An eSIM can do the same if the sheet says so. It does not have to.

Even then, many travellers stay on data eSIM plus WeChat. A +86 is mandatory only if someone in China refuses to reach you any other way.

Local SIMs are sold at airports and in the big three’s shops. Passport. Queue. Hours. A very early landing: the counter may be shut. An eSIM already active is not.

Brands you will see: visitor plans from China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and rebranded cards at the same counter. Read the real network, voice, hotspot, duration, zone (mainland, sometimes Hong Kong separate). That is not in our eSIM table.

Two compatible adults: two eSIMs. One shared local SIM is hotspot, with the same caps as a badly read eSIM.

Size the GB with the calculator. Do not buy 50 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.

Dual SIM: the real advantage of an eSIM in China

A recent phone does Dual SIM. The travel eSIM takes data. The UK nano (or a second eSIM) keeps the texts.

Banks, 2FA, accounts already tied to your UK number: that stays. A single local SIM forces a choice: remove the UK SIM, or travel with two devices.

Switch off data on the home plan, not the line. Roaming triggers on the data toggle, not on receiving an SMS.

Network: the shop does not win automatically

A China Telecom plastic card is not “more Chinese” than an eSIM that names China Mobile. See China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom.

Off the megacities, look for China Mobile on the eSIM. In the city, Unicom and Telecom work. China Broadnet: read the zone.

If the handset cannot take eSIM, a local SIM and pocket WiFi are the two doors. The router wins for tablets. The SIM wins if this phone must have a number.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Does the phone take eSIM? Yes, then eSIM. No, then local SIM or pocket WiFi.
  2. Do you need a +86? No, then eSIM. Yes, then a local SIM, possibly plus an eSIM on another device.
  3. Route off the hubs: a network written as China Mobile.
  4. Hong Kong or Macau on the same trip: check the plan zone.
  5. Price: China comparison plus promo codes, next to the counter price for the same dates.
  6. Home roaming: 24–48 hours only, or never. Recalculate.

FAQ

If the phone takes eSIM, rarely. Plastic is mainly for a Chinese number (+86), a stay of several weeks, or a handset that refuses the QR. Otherwise the eSIM skips the counter and the passport.
