eSIM vs pocket WiFi in China (2026): coverage and verdict

At the airport, the Wi-Fi counter queue often starts before the bags turn. The eSIM is already in the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Both stick to the same kind of Chinese tower. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset takes it. Pocket WiFi only comes in if some screens cannot.
This piece does not freeze a yuan price. Rentals and marketplaces move. For today’s plans: the China eSIM comparison.
China eSIM: the default if the phone is compatible
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy a China plan. Maps, messages, tickets, translation downloaded offline. No deposit, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes in a taxi.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank 2FA texts. Switch off EE, Vodafone and Three data: China is not in roam-like-at-home. Detail: China roaming 2026.
Read the named network. Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen: China Mobile, Unicom and Telecom all work. Off the corridor, China Mobile first. See Chinese operators.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Yesim, GoMoWorld, Ubigi, Airhub, Orange Travel: open the plan sheet (network, 5G, hotspot, mainland or Hong Kong) before you pay, not the brand homepage.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet
Open it first to match MNO, hotspot and checkout price. Not a router to return.

Holafly
Network on the plan sheet
Unlimited: read fair use before you replace a family pocket WiFi.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same demand: network written, hotspot written, zone written.

Yesim
Network on the plan sheet
Marketplace. The logo does not say whether connection sharing is in the pack.

GoMoWorld
Network on the plan sheet
Asia coverage is read plan by plan. “Asia” is not “mainland China”.
Nomad, GigSky, Ubigi, Airhub, Orange Travel: same grid. We talk about everyone. We crown no one. Promo codes stick to the checkout price, not to a 2024 screenshot.
When pocket WiFi in China still wins
The router is not the 2026 reflex. It wins in precise cases.
- Tablets, a Switch, e-readers, a laptop that cannot take eSIM, and that you will not run off the phone battery.
- A phone with no eSIM, or a locked one (MDM, regional variant). The tool says so before the airport.
- A group where several screens cannot swallow a QR. One eSIM per compatible adult is often simpler than a deposit and a router return.
- You want a separate box to leave in the flat, and you accept the queue, the deposit, the battery, and the return.
The rental desk (China Unicom or China Mobile counter, a rental marketplace, the hotel) names a network too. Read it. A router with no named MNO is not “better coverage” than a China Mobile eSIM.
eSIM vs pocket WiFi: the 2026 table
| Criterion | Travel eSIM | Pocket WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Before the flight | Rental, airport or online |
| Deposit / return | No | Often yes |
| One person, compatible phone | Default | Pointless |
| Several screens with no eSIM | Hotspot only if the pack writes it | Useful |
| Network | China Mobile / Unicom / Telecom if the sheet writes it | The rental’s network, to be read |
| UK line (texts) | Stays | Stays, if you did not leave UK data on by mistake |
| To return | Nothing | The box, charged, at the right counter |
Two adults with eSIM: two plans. Sharing one profile “for the family” breaks as soon as hotspot is capped. The data calculator stops you renting a router for a use that fitted in 1 GB a day per person.
Apps, filtering, and what a router does not fix on its own
In mainland China, a local IP (counter SIM, eSIM attached locally, or pocket WiFi on the same tower) sits behind access filtering: part of the usual apps and sites do not answer. That is not China Mobile failing against Unicom. It is where the traffic exits.
Some roaming eSIMs exit elsewhere. Some pocket WiFi rentals advertise different access on their sales sheet. Read that sheet. It is not a guarantee, and we do not publish steps to bypass the filtering. The support (eSIM, SIM, router) is chosen first on phone compatibility, named network, hotspot and price. The IP type is read next, on the same sheet.
WeChat, Alipay and maps downloaded before the flight stay the stack, whatever the box. Detail: Internet in China in 2026.
How to decide for the trip
Solo or a couple, two compatible phones, 10 days. Two eSIMs. No router. Network written. Home data off.
Family, two compatible adults, two tablets, a Switch. eSIM on the adults. A router only if the tablets must live without hotspot, or if the eSIM pack does not write sharing.
Phone with no eSIM. No magic QR. Pocket WiFi or a local SIM. The SIM wins if you want a +86. The router wins if several screens share.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Check that the plan, eSIM or router, covers both. Often it does not.
