USA roaming in 2026: EE, Vodafone, Three and the best eSIM options

Roam-like-at-home is an EU rule the UK left. The United States was never in it. Flipping EE, Vodafone or Three data roaming at JFK without reading the brochure is a bet on the bill.
An extra-EEA pass can stay rational for 48 hours. Beyond that, if the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, we pick the eSIM. We keep the UK line for 2FA texts.
Grids move. EE, Vodafone, Three and the marketplaces do not freeze in an article. Recalculate the week you fly. For eSIMs: the USA comparison.
What EE, Vodafone and Three actually do (no trophy)
We talk about all of them. We crown none.
EE. Extra-EEA / “Roam abroad” style add-ons, plus some inclusive lists on higher plans. The United States is not Europe. Open the EE app. Note GB, days, hotspot, speed after the fair-use line. Ofcom-style rights do not freeze wholesale costs.
Vodafone UK. Rest-of-world / “Roam further” extras depending on the plan. Without an extra, data in the USA is the punitive rate. Open My Vodafone. Note GB, days, tethering.
Three. “Go Roam” never meant the whole planet. The United States is often outside the inclusive set. A day pass or a rest-of-world bolt-on is a separate product. Check Three’s destination list, not a 2022 blog.
Ireland (if you fly from Dublin). Vodafone IE, Three IE and eir treat the USA as extra-EEA too. Same method: read your plan, then the live table.
Orange Travel (a travel eSIM, a different shelf from a UK add-on) is in the catalogue: same network / hotspot reading as Airalo.
48 hours, a week, a month
A stopover or a weekend, no QR scanned, the UK number must stay the data line. The pass can win. Count useful GB, not the “stay connected” slogan.
A week in New York or a road trip. eSIM. Switch off UK data. The comparison lines up checkout price, named network, 5G, hotspot. Read T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon on the sheet: UK roaming attaches to your carrier’s roaming partner, not “the best tower”.
A month. Neither a stacked day pass, nor a vague unlimited. An eSIM whose volume and hotspot are written, or local prepaid if you want a +1. See eSIM vs local SIM.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (often T-Mobile or AT&T)
The alternative to a roam-abroad pass once the trip passes 48 h and the phone takes eSIM.

Holafly
Network on the plan sheet
Compare fair use with the UK add-on, not the word unlimited with a slogan.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same catalogue reading: network, hotspot, checkout price after a tracked promo.
Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: same table. No forever favourite.
Comparison
USA eSIM instead of the pass
Checkout price after a promo, named network, hotspot. Put it next to your carrier brochure.
The combo that works
Keep the UK SIM on for SMS, data off. Data on the eSIM. That is the default, not a trick.
Calls to US landlines and some forms want a +1. There, the local SIM wins. Pocket WiFi does not fix the number. It fixes tablets: eSIM vs pocket WiFi.
The network your UK pass lands on is not a traveller’s choice. The eSIM is: you read the name before you pay. Frame: US mobile networks.
Verdict
48 hours, no time for a QR, UK number essential as data: the pass can stay rational. As soon as the phone takes eSIM and the trip lengthens, we pick the eSIM. We do not freeze the add-on price. We put it next to the comparison the week you fly.
