Best US mobile networks in 2026: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and travel eSIM

At JFK, airport Wi-Fi is enough to open Uber. The street, the subway and the road to a park are not. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on Wi-Fi at home. Same towers as a local plan. Not the same ticket.
We do not crown a permanent “best US carrier”. We read the network on the plan sheet. An aggregator with no Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile written down is a gap, not a feature.
Prices move. For this week’s plans: the United States eSIM comparison.
Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile: who actually carries the radio
Consumer coverage sits on three national networks:
- Verizon. Often the widest reach outside cities, on Interstates and around parks. Urban 5G (C-band, plus mmWave in a few dense cores) says nothing about 4G in Montana.
- AT&T. A solid balance of cities, suburbs and highways. A frequent wholesale partner for travel eSIMs.
- T-Mobile. Very fast 5G in metros (mid-band). Thinner in some rural interiors, even after the UScellular footprint. A very common eSIM partner.
UScellular is no longer a fourth network on its own. T-Mobile closed the wireless deal on 1 August 2025: customers, stores, part of the spectrum. The brand moves across in phases. Towers and another slice of spectrum stay with Array Digital Infrastructure, an infrastructure company, not a tourist counter. If an eSIM sheet still prints “UScellular” in 2026, read it as a label in transition. Recheck the week you fly.
Boost Mobile (EchoStar) still exists as a consumer brand. Travel eSIM catalogues almost never name it. Do not wait for Boost on Airalo or Holafly.
Regional. C Spire is mostly the Mississippi Gulf. GCI carries a large share of Alaska. Hawaii sits on the big three. Puerto Rico (Claro, T-Mobile, Liberty) does not always follow the label “United States”.
In 2026, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Las Vegas and Washington hold in 4G, with dense 5G. The gap is further out: Zion, Yellowstone away from the lodges, Big Sur, the Utah desert, Dakota highways. There, the network name matters. Sometimes nobody covers. That is not an aggregator bug.
This is not a speed test from a Manhattan hotel lobby. Same method as Docomo / au / SoftBank: read the local operator before the app logo.
What that changes for a USA eSIM
A travel eSIM is not the Verizon plan sold in a shop. It is a profile attached to one (sometimes two) authorised partners.
Practical consequences:
- The phone does not arbitrate between T-Mobile and Verizon at every tower, unless the plan says so.
- “Local network” on a homepage is not enough. Open the sheet: T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, 5G, hotspot.
- Two “USA 10 GB” plans from two brands can sit on two different radios.
- A phone bought in Europe usually does well on T-Mobile and AT&T (bands 2, 4, 12, 66, and often 71). Verizon leans hard on band 13. Recent iPhones have it. Some European Androids do not, or are not on Verizon’s device list. That is why many travel eSIMs quietly skip Verizon.
That is why we default to the eSIM as soon as the phone takes one, and why we will not rank a brand with no named network. No deposit, no queue, no physical SIM to jam into a US iPhone with no tray. Pocket WiFi and a prepaid SIM stay plan B: eSIM vs local SIM, eSIM vs pocket WiFi.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (often T-Mobile or AT&T)
Large marketplace. Read T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon on the USA plan, not the app logo.

Holafly
Network on the plan sheet
“Unlimited” pitch: fair use and hotspot are often capped. A poor fit if you tether a laptop all day.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Tracked like the others. Open network, 5G and hotspot before you pay.
Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: same rule. Open all of them in the USA table. No forever favourite. Check the promo code at checkout, not in a screenshot.
Comparison
United States eSIM plans
Checkout price, named network, 5G, hotspot. Ranked from the tracked catalogue.
Which network to aim for
New York, West Coast, a city weekend. All three hold. Take the eSIM whose checkout price and hotspot fit, once the phone is compatible.
Road trip, parks, interior. Aim for a sheet that names Verizon, if the phone accepts it. Otherwise named AT&T or T-Mobile, plus offline maps. A gap at Zion is not a Holafly bug.
Alaska. Do not assume “USA means Verizon everywhere”. GCI carries a large share of the state. Check that the plan lists Alaska. Outside Anchorage, plan for offline.
Hawaii. Generally on the big three, often included in a USA plan. Confirm the line, especially if you continue to Puerto Rico.
Long stay, a US number, a laptop every day. The local network matters as much as hotspot rules and fair use. Read the hotspot guide. Past a few weeks, a T-Mobile or AT&T prepaid in a shop can win per GB: that is a different product. Detail: eSIM vs local SIM.
Install the profile before the flight. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only. Keep the EE, Vodafone or Three line for 2FA texts. Switch off home-plan data: the United States was never in UK roam-like-at-home. Detail: USA roaming 2026.
How to read a USA eSIM sheet
Same method as the rest of the catalogue.
- Local network written (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon) or named multi-network.
- Territory: mainland, Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico. Three different boxes.
- Duration versus trip dates. The clock starts at install or at first connection: read the line.
- Hotspot: allowed, capped, blocked. An unlimited with no published sharing allowance is a family trap.
- 5G: useful in Manhattan, not an argument in a canyon.
- Checkout price after a promo code.
An aggregator can sit on T-Mobile one month and AT&T the next. That is why the comparison is live, not a 2024 screenshot.
Verdict: local network first, brand second
If the phone takes eSIM, buy a USA eSIM. Pick the plan that names Verizon when you leave the cities (and the handset can use it), T-Mobile or AT&T if you stay in metros, and a readable hotspot if a laptop is coming.
We do not crown Verizon, Holafly or Airalo forever. We cross coverage, duration, hotspot and checkout price. Prepaid, pocket WiFi and UK roaming sit in the other USA notes.
