Internet in the USA: how to stay online in 2026 as a traveller

Staying online in the United States in 2026 is not “find a Starbucks”. It is having data before the belt at JFK, for Uber, the ticket, translation, the bank. If the phone is unlocked and takes eSIM, that is the plan.
Hotel Wi-Fi, prepaid, pocket WiFi and a roam-abroad add-on are complements. Not the default.
Catalogues move. The United States eSIM comparison is this week’s checkout price.
Five ways to connect, one default
1. Travel eSIM. QR at home. Data on landing. UK line kept for texts. We start here as soon as the phone is compatible.
2. Local SIM or eSIM from T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, or an MVNO (Visible, Mint, US Mobile). Useful for a +1 number or a month. Not for a weekend. Detail: eSIM vs local SIM.
3. Pocket WiFi. Plan B for tablets and locked phones. Same towers as the carrier inside the box. Detail: eSIM vs pocket WiFi.
4. EE, Vodafone or Three roaming. Rational for 48 hours if you have no time for a QR. Beyond that, useful GB often falls behind. Detail: USA roaming 2026.
5. Hotel, café, airport Wi-Fi. A complement. A motel may charge for it. The JFK hall does not follow you onto the Van Wyck.
By trip
Four days in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. eSIM. All three networks hold. Still read T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon on the sheet. Part of the New York subway works, long tunnels do not. Offline maps, as a habit.
Road trip, parks, inland West Coast. An eSIM whose network is named. Verizon if the phone can use it. Otherwise AT&T or T-Mobile, and offline maps downloaded on Wi-Fi the night before. Zion and the desert drop everyone. That is not an app ranking.
Nomad, a month, a laptop. Hotspot written down, or one eSIM per machine. An unlimited with no published fair use is a trap. Size the GB with the calculator. If you need a US number for rentals, local prepaid joins the conversation. The data eSIM stays the pipe.
Family. One eSIM per compatible adult. Pocket WiFi only for tablets. Do not run the whole hotel through one iPhone hotspot if the pack forbids it.
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico. Three files. Hawaii is often inside the continental plan: check. Alaska leans on GCI. Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam often fall outside the word “USA” on the sheet. The radio frame is in best networks.
What to do before you board
- Check eSIM compatibility and carrier unlock.
- Pick the plan that names the network, the duration, the hotspot, Hawaii or not.
- Scan the QR on Wi-Fi. Do not set it as the default data line before landing if your provider starts the clock at install: read the line.
- Switch off UK plan data. Keep the line for SMS.
- Download state maps, the ticket, the hotel address.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: open all of them. No forever favourite. The promo code is checked at checkout.

Verdict
Staying online in the USA in 2026, for a traveller whose phone is compatible: an eSIM, network read on the sheet, offline maps for the parks, UK line for the bank. The rest is an honest plan B, not the reflex.
