Thailand eSIM vs local SIM (2026): airport queue or QR at home

The AIS queue at Suvarnabhumi often starts before the belts. The eSIM lights up in the taxi if the QR was scanned at home. Both can sit on the same Thai network. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it.
A local SIM is not stupid. It is not the default. We pull it for a local number, a locked phone, or voice that travel data does not cover.
This piece does not freeze a baht tariff. Counters and marketplaces move. For today’s eSIMs: the Thailand comparison.
Thailand eSIM: default pick if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Thailand plan. Grab, Maps, translation, tickets, WhatsApp. No nano-SIM to eject, no deposit, no kiosk registration.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for Monzo / Starling / 2FA texts. Switch off EE / Vodafone / Three data roaming: Thailand is extra-EEA. Unless your UK plan actually lists the destination. Check the list the week you fly.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: we compare all of them. Read AIS, TrueMove H or dtac on the sheet, not just “Thailand”. Radio detail: best Thailand networks.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (often AIS / True / dtac)
Travel data, not a Thai number. Fine if Grab and Maps are enough.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same logic: QR at home, data on arrival. Open hotspot and duration.

Nomad
Network on the plan sheet
Tracked catalogue like the others. No airport queue. Read the named network.
Holafly stays in the table for unlimited: fair use and hotspot often stricter. Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld: same criteria. The promo code goes in at checkout.

Does your phone take eSIM?
iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel: check the model before you buy a QR. If it is no, then only a local SIM or Pocket WiFi.
When the tourist local SIM still wins
The AIS / True / dtac kiosk wins in three precise cases. Not “just in case”.
- You want a Thai number (local calls, some bookings, shops that only like GSM).
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- You prefer a human to register the line on the ground, passport in view.
Even at four people, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not one nano-SIM “for the family lead” by default. An unlimited whose tethering cap is unpublished is a trap. Read the hotspot guide.
True Corporation merged TrueMove H and dtac. At the airport the signs can still sit next to each other. Tourist packs (Traveller, Infinite, Happy Tourist depending on the year) change. Read today’s label: data, days, calls, 5G.
Local registration follows the regulator (NBTC). Passport. Sometimes an ID / face scan. Budget the time, especially if a Heathrow overnight lands at 05:00 and the AIS queue is already long. True or dtac next door can clear faster. That is not a reason to ignore AIS coverage outside cities.
Where to buy a local SIM (and what the eSIM skips)
| Channel | What you buy | Friction | When to open it |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM comparison | Travel data, QR | Home Wi-Fi | Default if the phone takes eSIM |
| AIS / True / dtac counter (BKK, DMK, HKT, CNX) | Local tourist SIM or eSIM | Queue, passport, sometimes a scan | Local number, incompatible phone |
| City shop / partner 7-Eleven | Local prepaid | Registration, language | Top-up, number, longer stay |
| Klook and similar | Often the same tourist pack, sometimes eSIM | Voucher to redeem | If the quote beats the comparator and the kiosk |
Rentals and kiosks are not in our eSIM catalogue. We compare travel data plans. Do not look there for a Thai number or a counter timetable.
An AIS eSIM bought on the operator’s site is not Airalo. It is a local product, with its own terms, app and registration. Useful. It is no longer “scan a QR in London and walk”.
Price: stick the kiosk to the comparator, same dates
A 7- or 8-day Thailand eSIM pack is paid per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The GB calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
The tourist SIM is paid in baht, sometimes with voice credit. Five devices do not share one nano-SIM. A solo who only opens Grab still pays the 8-day kiosk pack.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Thailand comparison, against the AIS / True sticker for the same dates. Once every pocket can take eSIM and you do not need a local number, the plastic SIM almost always loses.
UK roaming (EE / Vodafone / Three rest-of-world add-ons) is a third column. It keeps the number. Useful GB often costs more after 48 hours. Sheet: Thailand roaming 2026.

Comparison
Thailand eSIM plans
Price, local network, 5G and hotspot. Airport tourist SIMs are not in the table.
eSIM or local SIM by trip
Couple, 8 days, Bangkok + Phuket, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No 06:00 queue. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the pack writes it.
Family, 12 days, two adults on recent Galaxies, two tablets. Two eSIMs for the adults. Tablets: eSIM if they take it, else Pocket WiFi or hotspot read on the sheet. Not one SIM “for everyone”.
Solo, MDM work phone, eSIM refused. Tourist SIM at the counter, or Pocket WiFi. Do not buy a QR the device cannot swallow.
Long stay, coworking, local number for the landlord. AIS / True product (SIM or local eSIM). The aggregator stays a data plan. Both can coexist: travel eSIM + UK line, or local + UK.
Compare an eSIM and a tourist pack
- If the phone takes eSIM, open the Thailand sheet. Filter hotspot only if you share.
- Note the price paid (promo applied).
- Stick that total next to the AIS / True / dtac pack, same dates, baht converted on the day.
- Off the corridor, prefer an eSIM that writes AIS. A True kiosk SIM does not catch an AIS eSIM on a ferry or in a northern village.
