Morocco eSIM vs local SIM (2026): passport, price and the call

At Mohammed V or Menara the SIM kiosk often opens after the belts. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi-Fi. Both ride the same kind of Moroccan mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it. Plastic only comes in if you still need a local number, a locked phone, or a stay long enough that the shop really wins.
This piece does not freeze dirhams. IAM, Orange, inwi and marketplaces move. For today’s plans: the Morocco eSIM comparison.
Morocco eSIM: default if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Morocco plan. Maps, Careem / inDrive, WhatsApp, ONCF tickets. No ANRT queue, no passport photo at the counter, no APN at 1 a.m.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line on for Monzo / Starling / 2FA. Leave EE, Vodafone or Three data off: Morocco is extra-EEA. Detail: Morocco roaming 2026.
Orange Travel names Orange Maroc. GigSky publishes IAM on several packs. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, Ubigi, GoMoWorld, eSIMo: open the sheet (network, 5G, hotspot) before you pay, not the brand homepage.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same read as the others: MNO, hotspot, checkout price. A NordVPN logo does not replace IAM or Orange.

Airalo
Orange on local Choukran packs
Wide marketplace. Read the Morocco plan network and hotspot, not the app logo.

Holafly
Network on the plan sheet
“Unlimited” pitch: fair use and hotspot often capped. Poor pick if you tether a PC all day.

Orange Travel
Orange Maroc
Named local packs. Useful if you want a written MNO. Not the Yo SIM from an Orange shop.
When to buy a local SIM in Morocco
Plastic wins in three precise cases. Not “just in case.”
- You want a Moroccan number (taxis, agencies, local WhatsApp Business, dirham top-ups).
- The phone is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- You stay long enough that a shop prepaid bundle, topped up in dirhams, clearly beats N eSIMs from the catalogue. Do the maths. Do not assume it.
Even as a couple, if each pocket has a recent iPhone: two eSIMs, not one SIM “for both” by default. Unlimited with unpublished hotspot GB is still a trap. Read the hotspot guide.
Passport, ANRT, airport queue
Since 2014 ANRT has banned anonymous SIMs. Residents and visitors: ID before activation. In practice, passport at an IAM, Orange or inwi kiosk. Five to ten minutes if the queue is short. Longer if a Heathrow arrival lands with three charters.
All three operators staff Casablanca Mohammed V and Marrakech Menara, often Fès and Agadir too. City shop: same rule. A pavement card sold without taking your passport is not registered. It can die.
Orange Maroc also sells an eSIM online or in-store for its customers. IAM has a visitor eSIM. That is not Airalo. It is still local identity.

Does the phone take eSIM?
iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel: check the model before you buy a QR. If not, then plastic only.
Morocco eSIM vs local SIM price for 7 days
A Morocco eSIM pack for 7 to 30 days is paid per phone, in the checkout currency, promo applied. Two compatible adults: two plans. The GB calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
The local SIM is paid in dirhams: the card is often cheap, the data bundle separate (Marhaba, liberté, tic tac). Prices move. “20 GB for 120 MAD” on a 2025 forum is not a grid.
Do the maths once: N times the eSIM from the Morocco comparison, against the airport bundle plus queue time. Once each pocket can take eSIM, plastic almost always loses on time and Dual SIM.
| Criterion | Travel eSIM | Local IAM / Orange / inwi SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | QR at home | Passport, kiosk, sometimes APN |
| Moroccan number | Usually no | Yes |
| Network | Whatever the sheet writes | The shop’s MNO |
| Dual SIM | UK line + Morocco data | You often pop out the UK SIM |
| Top-up | App / new pack | Dirhams, USSD, operator app |

Comparison
Morocco eSIM plans
Price, local network, 5G and hotspot. Airport kiosks are not in the table.
eSIM or local SIM by itinerary
Marrakech + Fès, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No passport at the kiosk at 6 a.m. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the pack says so.
Family, 12 days, two adults on iPhone, one teen on locked Android. Two eSIMs for the adults. An inwi or Orange SIM for the teen, passport, if the phone refuses eSIM. Check models first.
Desert road trip, phone without eSIM. IAM SIM, official shop. Do not buy a QR the handset cannot swallow. Network: IAM, Orange, inwi.
Solo from Heathrow, 10 days, Pixel or SIM-free iPhone. eSIM. Install the night before. Turn off rest-of-world data on EE / Vodafone / Three.
Compare a Morocco eSIM and an airport bundle
Our table ranks eSIMs. It does not list today’s Marhaba or tic tac tariffs. Do not look for a USSD code there.
- If the phone takes eSIM, open the Morocco sheet. Filter hotspot only if you share to a tablet or laptop.
- Note the price paid (promo applied) for one pack, or N packs.
- Put that total next to the kiosk bundle, same dates. The SIM only wins if you need a local number, or the quote is truly lower and you accept the queue.
- Off the cities, prefer an eSIM that writes Maroc Telecom. A city Orange SIM does not catch an IAM eSIM in the Atlas.
