Japan eSIM vs local SIM (2026): which should you actually buy?

At Narita the SIM counter opens after the belts, with a passport and a queue. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi-Fi. As soon as the handset takes an eSIM profile, we pick the eSIM. A local SIM only comes in if you have a specific reason: a Japanese number, an incompatible phone, or a stay that looks like moving in.
This piece does not freeze yen prices. Shops and marketplaces move. Today’s plans: the Japan eSIM comparison.
Japan eSIM: the default if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone, iPhone XS or newer, Galaxy / Pixel that swallows a QR: buy an eSIM plan. Maps, translation, Suica, JR. No deposit. No nano-SIM to lose in a convenience store.
Install the profile before the flight. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for Monzo / Starling / 2FA texts. Switch EE / Vodafone / Three data roaming off: Japan is extra-EEA, and that toggle is how people buy a rest-of-world day pass they did not mean to. Detail in roaming in Japan 2026.
Read the named network (Docomo, au, SoftBank) like any other plan. An eSIM that writes Docomo is not “less local” than a SoftBank plastic card from Yodobashi. The contract changes. The mast, often not. See Japanese mobile networks.

PlanJapon
NTT Docomo 4G/5G
Data eSIM, named network. No Japanese number. Enough for most visitor trips.

BambooSIM
KDDI au 4G/5G
Local au packs, data. Still not a shop 070. Read the hotspot.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet
Marketplace. Same questions as the shop: which MNO, which hotspot, which duration.
Holafly, Saily, Nomad, GigSky, Yesim, Ubigi: same grid. We talk about everyone. We crown nobody. The live table cuts the price.
When a local SIM in Japan still wins
Three cases, not “just in case.”
- You want a Japanese number (070/080/090) for restaurant SMS, a delivery, a job on the ground, an Airbnb that refuses WhatsApp.
- The phone refuses eSIM: the compatibility tool says no, or the carrier locked the handset.
- You stay weeks, with voice + data that looks like a resident’s, and you accept passport + contract.
Even then, many travellers stay on data eSIM + WhatsApp. The 070 is only required if a Japanese third party will not reach you another way.
Buy the local SIM at the airport, BIC Camera, Yodobashi, sometimes an operator kiosk. Passport. Queue. Hours. A Heathrow red-eye that lands at 5 am: the counter may be shut. An eSIM already on, not.
Names you will see: Docomo / au / SoftBank visitor packs, IIJmio, Sakura Mobile, Mobal, and rebadged cards. Read the real network, voice, hotspot, duration. That is not in our eSIM table.
eSIM vs local SIM: the 2026 table
| Point | Travel eSIM | Local SIM (plastic) |
|---|---|---|
| Buy | Before the flight, from the UK | Airport, BIC Camera, Yodobashi |
| Passport at the counter | No | Yes, usually |
| Japanese number | Rarely | Often |
| UK line | Stays on Dual SIM | Often pulled (single nano) |
| Network | Docomo / au / SoftBank if the sheet writes it | The card’s MNO |
| Hotspot | Per plan | Per plan |
| Return | Nothing | Sometimes nothing (prepaid), sometimes a locker |
Two compatible adults: two eSIMs. One shared local SIM is hotspot, with the same caps as a badly read eSIM.
Size the GB with the calculator. Do not buy 50 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.

Price, local network, 5G, hotspot. BIC Camera plastic SIMs are not in the table.
Dual SIM: the real eSIM win in Japan
A recent phone does Dual SIM. The travel eSIM takes data. The UK nano (or a second EE eSIM) keeps SMS.
Banks, 3D Secure, WhatsApp already on +44: all stay. A single local SIM forces a choice: pull the UK SIM, or carry two devices.
Switch data on the UK plan off, not the line. Roaming trips on the data toggle, not on receiving SMS.
Network: the shop does not automatically win
A plastic SoftBank card is not “more Japanese” than a PlanJapon eSIM on Docomo. See Docomo, au, SoftBank.
Off the corridor, look for Docomo on the eSIM. In cities, au and SoftBank hold. Rakuten: read the area.
If the handset does not take eSIM, the local SIM and Pocket WiFi stay the two doors. The router wins for tablets. The SIM wins if this phone must have a number.
How to decide in five minutes
- Does the phone take eSIM? Yes → eSIM. No → local SIM or Pocket WiFi.
- Do you need a Japanese 070? No → eSIM. Yes → local SIM, maybe plus an eSIM on another device.
- Itinerary off Tokyo: network writes Docomo.
- Price: Japan comparison + promo codes, next to the shop quote for the same dates.
- UK roaming: 24–48 h only, or never. Recalculate.
