Canada eSIM vs local SIM (2026): QR at home or a shop queue

The SIM queue at Pearson is not the Thai ritual. Canada does not line up three tourist kiosks at the belts. The eSIM lights up in the taxi if the QR was scanned at home. Both can sit on Rogers, Bell or Telus. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it.
A local SIM is not stupid. It is not the default. We pull it for a Canadian number, a locked phone, or voice that travel data does not cover.
This piece does not freeze a dollar tariff. Shops and marketplaces move. For today’s eSIMs: the Canada comparison.
Canada eSIM: default pick if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Canada plan. Uber, Maps, tickets, WhatsApp. No nano-SIM to eject, no deposit, no shop registration.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for bank and 2FA texts. Switch off EE, Vodafone or Three data roaming: Canada is extra to any UK plan that still thinks in EU terms. Unless your plan actually lists the destination. Check the list the week you fly.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: we compare all of them. Read Rogers, Bell or Telus on the sheet, not just “Canada”. Radio detail: best Canada networks.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (often Rogers / Bell / Telus)
QR at home, data on arrival. Read the named network, not the Canada banner.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same logic: install before the flight. Open hotspot and duration.

Nomad
Network on the plan sheet
Tracked like the others. No shop queue. Read the named network.
Holafly stays in the table for unlimited: fair use and hotspot are often stricter. Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld: same criteria. The promo code is applied at checkout.
Tool
Does your phone take eSIM?
iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel: check the model before you buy a QR. If the answer is no, then a local SIM or Pocket WiFi.
When a local SIM still wins
Canadian prepaid exists. Rogers, Bell, Telus and Freedom sell cards and sometimes eSIMs in store. It is not a tidy “8-day tourist” product the way Thailand sells one.
A local SIM is the right tool in four cases:
- You want a Canadian number. Some bookings, waitlists and forms ask for a +1. Most travel eSIMs are data-only. WhatsApp covers family. Not a garage calling a UK mobile.
- The phone refuses eSIM, or it is carrier-locked. A prepaid nano-SIM is the path. Check the lock before you buy.
- A work phone (MDM) that blocks prepaid profiles. Test at home, not at the Trudeau exit.
- A long stay, several months, with a real need for a local line. Then recalculate Rogers, Bell, Telus, Koodo, Fido, Virgin Plus or Freedom prepaid against a renewed eSIM. We do not freeze the winner in an article.
Freedom and Videotron can be rational in Quebec or in town. On a Rockies drive, a Freedom SIM is not the same bet as a Bell or Telus SIM. SaskTel matters in Saskatchewan. Eastlink in parts of Atlantic Canada. If you are not going there, do not chase them.
ID: shops often ask for a passport, sometimes an address. Budget time. An aggregator eSIM skips that step. That is not a moral verdict on Rogers. It is a different ticket.
What a local SIM does not fix
It does not give a better mast than an eSIM on the same network. A Bell SIM and a Bell eSIM talk to the same antennas. Speed on the TTC, the Icefields Parkway or a cabin outside the village depends on the radio, not the plastic.
It also does not replace UK roaming if people must call your UK number. On a dual-SIM iPhone the clean combo is: UK line for texts, data on the eSIM. Pulling the UK SIM to “make room” kills bank texts. The frame: eSIM, roaming, local SIM.
Hotel Wi-Fi in Toronto or Montreal is often fine in the evening. It is not a plan for Uber in snow, a ferry, or the road to Banff. Detail: stay online in Canada.
How to choose without a story
- eSIM-compatible and data only: eSIM. Done.
- Need a +1, or a locked handset: local SIM or eSIM from Rogers, Bell, Telus or Freedom, passport in the pocket.
- Family: one eSIM per compatible adult. Hotspot from a single phone is a fallback, not a magic SIM for four screens. Read connection sharing.
- US border: a Canadian SIM does not become a US plan. If the route crosses New York or Seattle, read the North America guide.
Activate before the flight if you pick the eSIM: iPhone and Android.
Verdict
If the phone takes eSIM, buy the eSIM. A Rogers, Bell or Telus SIM stays the right tool for a local number or a locked device. We talk about everyone. We do not crown the shop or Airalo. Stick the comparison checkout price next to the store tariff the week you fly.
