Australia eSIM vs local SIM (2026): Sydney counter or a QR at home

The Telstra counter at Sydney often starts after a 22-hour flight. The eSIM switches on in the taxi if the QR was scanned at home. Both can sit on the same Australian network. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset can.
A local SIM is not silly. It is not the default. Pull it out for a local number, a locked phone, or voice the travel-data plan does not cover.
This text does not freeze a price in Australian dollars. Counters and marketplaces move. For today’s eSIMs: the Australia comparison.
Australia eSIM: the default if the phone is compatible
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, buy an Australia plan. Uber, Maps, translation, tickets, WhatsApp. No nano-SIM to eject, no deposit, no kiosk registration.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for Monzo / Starling / 2FA texts. Switch off EE, Vodafone or Three data: Australia is extra-EEA. Unless your plan really lists the country. Check the list the week you fly.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: we compare all of them. Read Telstra, Optus or Vodafone on the sheet, not only “Australia”. Radio detail: best mobile networks in Australia.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (Telstra, Optus or Vodafone)
Travel data, not an Australian number. Fine if Uber and Maps are enough.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Same logic: QR at home, data on arrival. Open hotspot and duration.

Nomad
Network on the plan sheet
Tracked catalogue like the others. No airport queue. Read the named network.
Holafly stays in the table for unlimited: fair use and hotspot are often stricter. Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld: same criteria. The promo code goes on at checkout.
Tool
Does your phone take eSIM?
iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel: check the model before you buy a QR. If the answer is no, then a local SIM or a Pocket WiFi.
When a local SIM still wins
The Telstra / Optus / Vodafone kiosk wins in three precise cases. Not “just in case”.
- You want an Australian number (local calls, a landlord, a local bank, a working holiday, shops that only like GSM).
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- You want a person to register the line on the spot, passport in view.
Even as a group of four, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not one nano-SIM “for the parent” by default. The hotspot on an unlimited whose cap is not published in GB is a trap. Read the hotspot guide.
Local registration follows ACMA rules: an Australian prepaid is sold with an identity check. Passport. Allow time, especially if a Heathrow flight lands early and the counter is still shut. That is not a reason to ignore Telstra outside cities: an Optus SIM at the kiosk does not catch a Telstra eSIM on a dirt road.
Where to buy a local SIM (and what the eSIM skips)
| Channel | What you buy | Friction | When to open it |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM comparison | Travel data, QR | Wi-Fi at home | Default if the phone takes eSIM |
| Telstra / Optus / Vodafone counter (SYD, MEL, BNE, PER, CNS) | Local prepaid SIM or eSIM | Queue, passport, ID | Local number, incompatible handset |
| High-street shop, supermarket, Australia Post | Local prepaid (often an MVNO on Telstra or Optus) | Registration | Top-up, a number, a longer stay |
| Marketplaces such as Klook | Sometimes the same tourist pack, sometimes an eSIM | Voucher to redeem | If the quote beats the comparison and the kiosk |
Rental desks and kiosks are not in our eSIM catalogue. We compare travel data plans. Do not look there for an Australian number or a counter timetable.
A Telstra eSIM bought from the operator is not Airalo. It is a local product, with its terms, its app, its identity check. Useful. It is no longer “scan a QR in London and walk on”.
Price: stick the kiosk next to the comparison, same dates
A 7- or 15-day Australia eSIM is paid per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The GB calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a city break of maps and messages, or 5 GB for three weeks of Maps in a van.
Prepaid is paid in Australian dollars, sometimes with voice credit. Five devices do not share one nano-SIM. A solo who only opens Uber still pays the kiosk pack.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Australia comparison, against the Telstra / Optus / Vodafone price for the same dates. As soon as every pocket can take an eSIM and you do not need a local number, the plastic SIM almost always loses.
UK roaming (EE, Vodafone, Three rest-of-world passes) is a third column. It keeps the number. The useful GB is often dearer once the trip passes 48 hours. Dedicated sheet: Australia roaming 2026.

eSIM or local SIM by trip
Couple, 10 days, Sydney + Melbourne, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No queue after a long-haul. Hotspot only if a laptop in the evening, and if the pack says so.
Family, 3 weeks, east coast, two adults on recent Galaxies, two tablets. Two eSIMs for the adults. Tablets: eSIM if they take it, otherwise Pocket WiFi or a hotspot the sheet actually allows. Not one SIM “for everyone”.
Solo, MDM work phone, eSIM refused. Prepaid at the counter, or Pocket WiFi. Do not buy a QR the handset cannot swallow.
Working holiday, local number for the landlord and shifts. A Telstra / Optus / Vodafone product (SIM or local eSIM, identity done). The aggregator stays a data plan. The two can sit together: travel eSIM + UK line, or local + UK line.
Compare an eSIM and a prepaid pack
- If the phone takes eSIM, open the Australia sheet. Filter hotspot only if you share.
- Note the price paid (promo applied).
- Stick that total next to the Telstra / Optus / Vodafone pack, same dates, dollars converted on the day.
- Off the corridor, prefer an eSIM that writes Telstra. A Vodafone SIM at the kiosk does not catch a Telstra eSIM in the Centre.
