Thailand eSIM vs Pocket WiFi (2026): price, coverage and the call
AI-generated image

At Suvarnabhumi the Wi-Fi counter queue often starts before the belts. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi-Fi. Both ride the same kind of Thai mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it. Pocket WiFi only comes in if some screens cannot.

This piece does not freeze a baht-per-day table. Rental shops and marketplaces move. For today’s plans: the Thailand eSIM comparison.

Thailand eSIM: default pick if the phone is compatible

Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Thailand plan. Maps, Grab, translation, tickets. No deposit, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes in a 7-Eleven.

Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi-Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line for Monzo / Starling / 2FA texts. Switch off EE / Vodafone / Three data roaming, unless the plan explicitly lists Thailand.

Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld: open the sheet (AIS / True / dtac, 5G, hotspot) before you pay, not the brand homepage. Mast detail: best mobile networks in Thailand.

Holafly

Network on the plan sheet

“Unlimited” pitch: fair use and hotspot often capped. A poor pick if Pocket WiFi was meant “for the whole family” via your phone.

Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: same criteria, same table.

When to rent Pocket WiFi in Thailand

The router wins in three precise cases. Not “just in case”.

  1. Devices without eSIM (teen tablet, Switch, old Android) must stay online without draining your phone.
  2. The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
  3. Four or five screens stuck to the same table all day, and nobody wants to hold the hotspot.

Even at four, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not a router by default. An unlimited whose daily cap is unpublished in GB is a trap. Read the hotspot guide.

A local SIM is another plan B, not a synonym of the router. Sheet: eSIM vs local SIM.

iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel: check the model before you buy a QR. If it is no, then only Pocket WiFi or a tourist SIM.

Where to book Pocket WiFi (Klook, ThaiSims, SAMURAI)

Rental shops are not in our eSIM catalogue. You book on their site or a marketplace, pick up at the airport, a locker or the hotel, and return it on departure. Read the network on the rented plan (AIS or True), the insurance, and the price if the device is lost.

ChannelNetwork often advertisedPickupBook
KlookAIS or True depending on the activityCounter BKK / DMK / HKT / CNX, sometimes hotelRead the real rental shop on the listing
ThaiSims, Smile WiFi, Muay Thai WiFiOften AISSuvarnabhumi and other airportsShop site or marketplace
SAMURAI WiFi, Travelers WiFiSometimes dual-SIM AIS + TrueAirport, sometimes deliveryUseful if the sheet really writes both

Klook and GetYourGuide often resell the same boxes. The real rental shop is written in the activity. Pay the quote, not the “−80 %” banner.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) has the most counters. Don Mueang (DMK) is thinner. Phuket (HKT) and Chiang Mai (CNX) cover the main fleets. Krabi or Koh Samui: hotel delivery, before departure.

Counter hours: a Heathrow overnight that lands at 05:00, an eSIM already live beats a closed shutter. Hotel delivery is booked before you fly, not in the passport queue.

A SoftBank Pocket WiFi in Japan and an AIS Pocket WiFi in Thailand are not the same catalogue. Do not import a Narita reflex. Here the radio is called AIS or True.

Thailand eSIM vs Pocket WiFi rental for 7 days

A 7-day Thailand eSIM pack is paid per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The GB calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.

Pocket WiFi is paid per day, plus insurance, plus sometimes a deposit. Five devices on the same router do not multiply the rent. A solo who opens Grab for an hour still pays the day rate.

Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Thailand comparison, against the Klook or ThaiSims quote for the same dates. Once every pocket can take eSIM, the router almost always loses.

Thailand has some of the cheapest eSIMs in Asia. That shrinks the window where a deposit box still makes sense.

eSIM or Pocket WiFi by itinerary in Thailand

Bangkok + Chiang Mai, 8 days, a couple, two iPhones. Two eSIMs. No 06:00 counter. Hotspot only if a laptop at night, and if the pack writes it.

Family, 12 days, two adults on iPhones, two tablets. Two eSIMs for the adults. An AIS Pocket WiFi (Klook / ThaiSims) for the tablets, if they must stay online in the van. Not a router “for everyone” if the teens already have compatible phones. Check the models.

Islands + ferries, phone without eSIM. Pocket WiFi whose listing writes AIS. Do not buy a QR the device cannot swallow.

Solo from Heathrow, 10 days, Pixel or SIM-free iPhone. eSIM. Install the night before. Switch off the rest-of-world add-on. Offline maps for the parks.

Compare a Thailand eSIM and a Pocket WiFi quote

Our table ranks eSIMs. It does not list Klook, ThaiSims or SAMURAI. Do not look there for a deposit or a counter timetable.

  1. If the phone takes eSIM, open the Thailand sheet. Filter hotspot only if you share to a tablet or laptop.
  2. Note the price paid (promo applied) for one pack, or for N packs.
  3. Stick that total next to the rental quote, same dates. The router only wins if screens without eSIM remain, or if the quote is genuinely lower.
  4. Outside Bangkok, prefer an eSIM that writes AIS. A True Pocket WiFi does not catch an AIS eSIM on a ferry.

FAQ

If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM, rarely. Rent Pocket WiFi only for tablets, a Switch, an MDM work phone, or laptop tethering you will not run through the handset. Start with the compatibility tool.
