Japan eSIM vs Pocket WiFi (2026): price, coverage and the call
At Narita the Wi‑Fi counter queue often starts before the belts. The eSIM is already on the phone if you scanned it on home Wi‑Fi. Both ride the same kind of Japanese mast. Take the eSIM as soon as the handset accepts it. The router only comes in if some screens cannot.

Japan eSIM: default pick if the phone is compatible
Unlocked phone that takes an eSIM: buy a Japan plan. Maps, translation, Suica, JR tickets. No deposit, no locker, no bill if a router vanishes in a convenience store.
Install the profile before the flight, on stable Wi‑Fi. Turn data roaming on the eSIM only. Keep the UK line on for Monzo / Starling / 2FA texts. Leave EE, Vodafone or Three data roaming off - Japan is extra-EEA, and that toggle is how people buy a day pass they did not mean to.

When to rent Pocket WiFi in Japan
The router wins in three cases. Not “just in case”.
- Devices without eSIM (teen tablet, Switch, old Android) must stay online without draining your phone.
- The handset is carrier-locked, or the compatibility tool says no.
- Four or five screens at the same table all day, and nobody wants to run hotspot.
Even with four people, if every pocket has a recent iPhone: four eSIMs, not a router by default. Hotspot on an “unlimited” pack whose daily cap is not printed in GB is a trap - read the hotspot guide.

Where to book Pocket WiFi (NINJA, Japan Wireless, Global WiFi)
Rental shops are not in our eSIM catalogue. You book on their site (or a marketplace), pick up at the airport, a locker or the hotel, and return on the way out. Read the network on the rental you pay, the insurance, and the lost-device fee.

NINJA WiFi is the name you see most at Narita / Haneda / Kansai counters. SoftBank holds Tokyo–Osaka. Weaker once the trip leaves that corridor, unless the listing says otherwise.
Japan Wireless pushes Docomo on its unlimited routers. Open them first for Hokkaido, a remote onsen, a long JR. They also sell eSIM: useful if the phone takes it, pointless to add a router “just in case”.
Global WiFi is the SoftBank shop. Same radio logic as NINJA. Compare quotes for the same dates, not homepages.
Klook and GetYourGuide often resell the same boxes. The actual shop (NINJA, Telecom Square, and so on) is in the activity text. Pay the quote, not the “80% off” banner.
Counter hours: a 5 a.m. arrival from Heathrow plus a live eSIM skips a closed desk. Hotel delivery is booked before you fly, not in the immigration queue.
Japan eSIM price vs Pocket WiFi rental for 7 days
A 7-day Japan eSIM is priced per phone. Two compatible adults: two plans. The data calculator stops you buying 20 GB for a maps-and-messages city break.
Pocket WiFi is a daily rate, plus insurance, plus sometimes a deposit. Five devices on one router do not multiply the rent. A solo traveller who opens Maps for an hour still pays the day.
Do the sum once: N times the eSIM from the Japan comparison, against a NINJA or Japan Wireless quote for the same dates. Once every pocket can take eSIM, the router almost always loses.

JR Pass + onsen + an island, phone without eSIM. Pocket WiFi whose listing writes Docomo. Do not buy a QR the handset cannot swallow.

- Put that total next to the rental quote, same dates. The router only wins if screens without eSIM remain, or the quote is genuinely lower.
- Off Tokyo, prefer an eSIM pack that writes Docomo. SoftBank Pocket WiFi does not catch a Docomo eSIM in a remote onsen.
