USA eSIM vs pocket WiFi (2026): price, coverage and verdict

In Japan, pocket WiFi is an airport-hall reflex. In the United States, it is not. Hotels often have decent Wi-Fi. Uber, the subway and the road to a park need a radio in your pocket. If the phone takes eSIM, we start there.
The router is not foolish. It is plan B: tablets, a Switch, a locked phone, or laptop tethering you refuse to drain through the handset battery.
Rental prices move, deposit included. We do not freeze them here. Today’s eSIMs: the USA comparison.
eSIM or pocket WiFi: the 2026 table
| Travel eSIM | Pocket WiFi | Hotel Wi-Fi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default if the phone is compatible | Yes | No | No |
| Setup | QR at home | Pickup, deposit, return | Password at reception |
| Network | The one written on the sheet | The router’s carrier, often the same trio | The hotel’s cable, not the street |
| Several screens | One eSIM per person, or hotspot if the pack writes it | One box for the group | The room only |
| Parks and canyons | A gap if the tower is missing | The same gap | Useless |
TravelWiFi, Tep, Skyroam (Solis) and carrier Jetpacks exist. We name them. We do not rank them in the eSIM table: it is not the same product, and a deposit is not a promo code.
Why we default to the eSIM
No deposit, no locker at JFK, no extra router battery on top of the phone. The profile installs before the flight. On landing, Uber starts immediately, UK data off.
Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Yesim, GigSky, GoMoWorld, Airhub, Orange Travel: same reading. T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon on the sheet. The detail on the three networks, UScellular (wireless business acquired by T-Mobile on 1 August 2025) and Alaska is in best US networks.

Airalo
Network on the plan sheet (often T-Mobile or AT&T)
One eSIM per adult beats a router if the phones are compatible.

Holafly
Network on the plan sheet
Unlimited does not replace a pocket WiFi if hotspot is capped. Read the line.

Saily
Network on the plan sheet
Hotspot and fair use before the family pitch.

When pocket WiFi wins
Kids’ tablets, a Switch, readers that want a network. They do not swallow a travel eSIM QR. A shared box makes sense.
An MDM or carrier-locked phone. The eSIM will not install. The router will. Still keep an eSIM on one adult whose phone is free, so you are not stuck on a rental battery.
A laptop all day, and you refuse to tether. Fair use on unlimited plans often breaks there. Either an eSIM whose sharing is written in GB, or a router whose deposit you accept. The hotspot guide avoids the wrong unlimited.
A family of four recent iPhones. Four eSIMs, or two plus a hotspot that is clearly allowed. One pocket WiFi “for everyone” ends as a queue on the box, and a dead device when it stays in the hotel.
The router uses the same radio as an eSIM on that carrier. It does not improve Yellowstone. It shares a signal that already exists.
Verdict
Compatible phone: eSIM. Pocket WiFi only for screens that cannot take the QR. Hotel Wi-Fi fills the evening. It does not replace street data. Local prepaid is a different argument: eSIM vs local SIM.
