Canada eSIM vs Pocket WiFi (2026): price, coverage and verdict
Pocket WiFi is not a Canadian reflex the way a Wi-Fi egg is at Narita. People still rent one, at the airport or online. The eSIM is already on if the QR was scanned at home. Same masts. Different logistics.
If the phone is unlocked and takes an eSIM profile, we pick the eSIM. The router stays plan B: tablets, a Switch, a locked phone, or laptop tethering you will not run through the handset battery.
Plan prices move. For today’s eSIMs: the Canada comparison. Router rentals are not in that table.
Canada eSIM: the default as soon as the phone takes it
No deposit, no locker at Pearson, Trudeau or Vancouver, nothing to return before the flight home. Uber, Maps, train tickets, WhatsApp: a profile covers that.
Install it before you board. On arrival, eSIM data only. UK line kept for texts. EE, Vodafone or Three data off, unless the plan really lists Canada.

Pocket WiFi: when the rental wins
The brick wins if some screens cannot swallow a QR.
- Kids’ tablets, a Switch, connected readers. An eSIM on each adult phone does not feed those devices if hotspot is banned.
- A phone with no eSIM, or a locked one. The router skips the SIM shop if you do not need a number.
- A laptop all day and you refuse to tether through the phone. Pocket WiFi is then an energy choice, not a better network.
- A group whose phones are locked. One brick can be simpler than five plastic SIMs. Still count the battery and the person who carries it.
Rental desks (airport counters, online specialists, devices such as GlocalMe or Solis) talk about unlimited Canada Wi-Fi. Read the network behind it: Rogers, Bell, Telus or Freedom. A Freedom router does not cover the Rockies better than a Freedom eSIM. The deposit, the locker and the flight home are part of the price. We do not ignore them to make the eSIM win on paper.
In winter (Quebec City, Banff, Montreal in January) the brick’s battery dies faster in a cold pocket. The eSIM has no brick. That is not a universal argument. It is a field detail.

A couple, two recent iPhones. Two eSIMs, or one eSIM plus hotspot if the pack allows the second phone in the evening. Not a router “to be safe”.
A family with tablets. eSIM on each compatible adult, Pocket WiFi only for the screens that stay. Check the data calculator before a vague unlimited.

Verdict
Compatible phone: eSIM. Pocket WiFi if some screens cannot take the QR, or if you refuse to tether. We do not claim the rental is a scam. We say it is not the default plan in Canada in 2026, as soon as eSIM is possible.
